Welcome to Summit Roots

Where adventure meets nature, and every journey brings you closer to the land and yourself.

Our Story

I created Summit Roots to help people step out of the everyday and into the wild. Whether it’s a one-day micro-adventure or a multi-day hike through hills, mountains, forests, or woodlands, our aim is the same: to explore, reconnect, and grow.

What We Offer

Summit Roots is more than guided hiking. It’s about creating meaningful adventures where you can:

Learn new outdoor skills, go further, higher, off path, wild camp

Gain confidence for your own future explorations

Discover the stories, ecology, and myths of the land

Take a break from the noise and reset your mind

We explore not just the trails, but also the trees, the birds, the local history, and the folklore that give each place its unique character.

Example Days Out

Every walk is tailored to you — your goals, your pace, your curiosity.

We offer both circular and linear routes, ranging from 9 to 26 miles. Each day begins with a short welcome, a safety briefing, and a chat about the route ahead.

Out on the trail, we typically walk 3 to 4 miles between breaks, pausing to take in points of interest, watch wildlife, or simply enjoy the view. There are regular stops to refuel, rest, and soak up the experience — because it’s not just about distance, it’s about connection.

A note on timings and difficult ratings.

Timings are estimates but can vary based on the pace of the group and the curiosity of the group to explore the landscape around them.

Difficulty levels are our subjective rating based on distance and the amount of up and downhill. Please contact us if in doubt and you have any questions.

Why It Matters

Nature has always been my happy place. Only recently did I understand why. Like many families, mine has experienced mental health struggles. That personal connection led me to become a certified Mental Health First Aider and an executive mental wellbeing sponsor in my corporate life.

Now, through Summit Roots, I aim to bring that experience together—offering a space for people to breathe deeply, move freely, and reconnect with what really matters.

A Lifelong Passion

I'm Mark and spending time in nature has been a constant in my life for over 30 years. During the Covid lockdowns, I made the decision to turn that passion into something more. I began training seriously to keep myself and others safe in the mountains, to learn more about the environment, and to transition from a long corporate career to becoming a qualified Mountain Leader.

I’m currently working toward or have already achieved the following qualifications:

  • NNAS Gold (National Navigation Award Scheme)

  • Outdoor First Aid Qualified (Band 3, the recognised standard for outdoor leaders)

  • Mountain Leader (Summer) – Examining in 2025

  • Surrey Hills Ambassador – Examining Autumn 2025
